Lesson FAQs and Information

Why Online Lessons?

  • Students can experience interactive lessons with the convenience of being in their own home!
  • Guidance and instruction of an experienced teacher
  • Regular communication about progress
  • Stability of teacher/lessons (Especially important for families whose jobs require frequent relocation)

How Long Should Students Practice?

Consistent practice is key! Students should practice as often as their schedule allows. Quality practice is also vital. Learning how to practice and working on problem areas of a piece or song, instead of playing through and repeating mistakes. Students will learn to incorporate the same practice techniques taught to them in their lessons. Very young students will benefit from the help and guidance of a parent or guardian. This can be a very positive, bonding experience! It is my experience that the success of many younger students is dependent upon how engaged and involved the parents/guardians are.

What Equipment do I need?

  • A computer/laptop, ipad or tablet, or phone. (A device with a larger screen is preferrable because it allows the student to see better, and it does help things feel more personable.)
  • Piano (acoustic or full size 88 key electric piano with weighted keys/damper pedal.)
  • A stand to hold the device at the appropriate height and angle during the lesson. (Tripods for all devices can be purchased for a minimal amount. I have also seen students use boxes, a shelf or ironing board to prop up their device!)
  • A good internet connection (this is important for the quality of the lesson)
  • A ZOOM account

What Type of Music will the Student Learn?

Beginner level students typically start out using a method of some sort. I am a classically trained pianist, but I love many different genres of music. I love teaching songs and pieces that the student loves. I believe in learning a variety of styles of music and students will have the opportunity to play many different pieces. Students will also study music theory, sight reading, ear-training, and performance for a well-rounded music education.

What if my power goes out? Or I have trouble with internet connection?

No Worries! Technology glitches happen and it could happen to me as well. In such a case we would either reschedule, or try a different platform for the day.
